Without a beep?

Some people don't have an hourly alarm or it would be inappropriate to hear a beep once an hour. Don't worry. What about this...

  • Put a dot of tip-ex on your watch. It will visually remind whenever you look at your watch
  • Put your watch on the other arm.
  • Put your purse/wallet in the other pocket.
  • Put up a post-it note in your car, by the fridge, on the bedroom door etc. Anywhere you pass regularly
Some people are concerned they cant interrupt their day. Remember this...
  • It's NOT a call to prayer, read your Bible, close your eyes or anything religious
  • It's a reminder that God is with you
  • It's an alert to not think you are on your own
  • It's an opportunity to take a passing thought that your next action may be different if you knew Jesus was there
  • It's a comfort that He understands - you are not alone.
Everyday a hundred and one thoughts go through our mind. How many are about Jesus? How many of our thoughts are informed by the fact that He loves us and wants the best for us. Let this simple reminder slowly and progressively change our thought patterns.

Starting thoughts

The plan for many of you is to start the 60:60 experiment from Good Friday. Here are some tips and things to think about:

  • Don't be religious - if you don't remember every hour don't worry. You've probably thought more about God today then normal.
  • Find a system - If an alarm works for you then great. If not maybe post-it notes. Maybe a dot on your watch. Anything that works for you.
  • Stamina not speed - 60 days is a long run. This is about consistency and changing patterns of behaviour. Stick with it.
  • Don't go it alone - If you were walking a marathon it would harder by yourself. Partner with someone else who is doing 60:60 and share your experiences on a regular basis.
  • Share the news - Use the blog to share your thoughts and experiences, even the tough bits. It's not too trivial. Let other's know how its going for you and be encouraged by others too.
  • Listen - Take 40 minutes each week to listen to the Podcast that's available. It will help encourage and guide you.
Lastly let others know you've started by posting to the blog and/or facebook group. Contact me if you dont know how to.

When to start?

The official start date for this is this Friday (Good Friday). But there's no reason you can't start sooner. As soon as you have some form of hourly alarm why not start. The blog has a post about ideas on alarms or reminders.

Post here (and on the Facebook group) when you start. Contact me if you need to know how to post to the blog.

I started Sunday 28th March.

The hourly alarm?

One of the big ideas behind using something that beeps to remind you about the 60-60 experiment is that most of us will otherwise stay in our daily routines. We often need an external reminder - like a watch, timer or computer alarm. Though something active that beeps is the best, passive items (like sticky notes, signs, a dot on your watch, etc.) can also be used.

Beeping Watches / Timers

Many timer/countdown watches are available, including these at Amazon.co.uk:

Kitchen-type countdown timers are also available, including these at Amazon.co.uk:

Computer Timers

Someone who has done the 60-60 Experiment wrote a short program, which runs under Windows, that you can use instead of a watch beep. The program creates a pop-up message every 60 minutes (not necessarily on the hour). Jett, who wrote the program, recommends that you put a shortcut to this program in your startup folder. (that way you don't need to remember to start the program manually each day) Press - to close this free-running application.

Download popup.exe (Right-click an choose "save as" or simply click on the link to download it. If you get a warning about it being from an unknown publisher, choose to run the program.)

Reminder items around your home & work

If you don't wear a watch, you might use post-it notes or other items as reminder. Place these items around your car, home, or office. People have suggested putting these reminders on their bathroom mirrors, steering wheels, wallets, computer monitors, and around their kitchens. When one catches your eye, use it as your 60-60 reminder.

Any other ideas? Post them here or send them to 6060@oakchurch.co.uk

60:60 Podcasts

John Burke preached a message each week of the 60:60 series at his church. I shall make available the audio of these messages on a weekly basis on a podcast page.

It will really help you understand this concept and stay on track if you can listen to these each week. Once you have listened feel free to comment back on this blog your thoughts.
